  1. When a seemingly conventional person makes an unconventional statement, everybody around them notices.
  2. Maintaining a mohawk is harder than you might initially think. You need “Ice” spray, or egg whites, the right comb, and a lot of time.
  3. There was a time when punk music was relevant, exciting, and anti-authoritarian. It may not sound the same in the future, but I hope that the punk aesthetic continues to resist at the fringes of music and pop culture.
  4. A new haircut can work wonders for your social life.
  5. If you have a mohawk that’s well maintained in high school, you’re told that you look punk rock. If you let it fall to the side, you’re told you look gay. Either way, you’re being counter-cultural…at least that’s how it used to be.
  6. Sometimes, I make gut decisions. Once the decision is made, I am 99% likely to take action, regardless of how bizarre or irrational that decision seems.
  7. High school is a fish bowl, or at least it feels that way when you’re in high school. It’s like a small town, where everybody knows what is basically going on with everybody…especially when something unusual happens.
  8. Maybe you can’t judge a book by its cover, but we do make aesthetic choices in order to tell a story about ourselves.
  9. My Zayde hated my mohawk more than any other thing. It’s one of the first times I’ve ever heard him openly express disgust or displeasure.
  10. Cutting your hair can be an emotional, frightening, or liberating experience.
